The U.S. convenience store count increased to a record 154,535 stores as of December 31, 2016, a 0.2% increase (340 stores) from the year prior, according to the latest NACS/Nielsen Convenience Industry Store Count. Overall, 80.1% of convenience stores (123,807 total) sell motor fuels, and the convenience retailing industry continues to be dominated by single-store operators, which account for 63.1% of all convenience stores (97,504 stores total).

Convenience stores offer more than convenience. Overall, the industry offers speed of service to time-starved consumers who want to get in and out of the store quickly. These shoppers recognize this channel of trade for its convenient locations, extended hours of operation, one-stop shopping, grab-and-go foodservice, variety of merchandise and fast transactions. ​
