Oil By The Numbers
Petroleum Track
Wednesday, October 21 | 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM    Location: N262/N264

The petroleum business is loaded with numbers, and in many cases, those statistics drive prices each day, week or even month. Few analysts will tell you how to distinguish between what represents statistical noise, and what truly reflects a trend. In his typical wry fashion, OPIS Chief Oil Analyst, Tom Kloza, will tell you what you need to know about the meaningful numbers for gasoline and diesel – whether it’s the metrics in the futures market, the data on inventories and production, or the forecasts on demand that come out of the think tanks and investment banks. You will also learn about a simple survey about market sentiment that can be the best indicator of what lies ahead for your retail business.

What You Will Learn

  • How fuel prices are swayed by much more than just supply and demand and how Wall Street impacts your profit margin
  • The oft-times contentious relationship between crude oil and the U.S. Dollar
  • Whether oil will come close to testing its triple-digit highs of last year and why
  • How crowd behavior moves markets and how smart fuel buyers deal with the “herd mentality”
