Spencer is the Director of Emerging Platforms within Google’s Commerce Business Unit. In this capacity, Spencer oversees merchant relations and works cross-functionally with Google’s Product and Engineering teams. He and his team are developing next generation commerce platforms that leverage Google’s advertising systems, smartphone technology and the Android operating system.
Since joining Google in 2003, Spencer has worked across numerous business segments and helped to develop and launch several new emerging businesses. Before joining the Commerce Team, Spencer spent two years as the Director of Sales Development and Strategy for the US Agency Business, where he was responsible for Operations, Sales Programs & Marketing and Learning & Development. Prior to that Spencer was the Director of Google’s Print Ads program and oversaw advertiser sales, publisher development and operations groups. In his first role at Google, Spencer started the Business and Industrial Market’s Industry Group leading business development, sales strategy and marketing efforts for the industry.
Before Google, Spencer was the VP of Marketing and Communications for New York-based Koko Interactive (Division of WPP Group) a services firm focused on Web integration for Fortune companies. Spencer began his career in traditional print media, first at the Aspen Times, in Aspen Colorado and then later with Faulker & Gray, a division of Thomson Media.
Spencer is regularly called on as a domain expert and has been a spokesperson for Google with quoted commentary in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, AdAge and Brand Week, to name a few. Spencer has a passion for building businesses and a track record in unlocking new revenue streams critical to the long-term health of the enterprise.
Among other nonprofit activities, Spinnell is a founding board member of Matt’s Promise, an organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of young people affected by terminal illnesses.
