ALEXANDRIA, VA – Lance Armstrong, one of the world’s most recognized athletes, has been announced as an October 7 General Session speaker for NACS Show 2008. The NACS Show will take place October 4 to 7 at McCormick Place in Chicago.
In 1996, as one of the top ranked cyclists in the world, Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer and was given far less than a 50/50 chance to survive. However, through determination, dedication and strength Armstrong recovered and went on to win the elite Tour de France a record seven consecutive times, from 1999 until he retired from racing in 2005.
Armstrong also has become a leading advocate in the search for a cancer cure and for people living with the disease. The Lance Armstrong Foundation was founded in 1997 to unite people through programs and experiences and empower cancer survivors to live life on their own terms and to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer. The Foundation focuses on cancer prevention, access to screening and care, research and quality of life for cancer survivors. To date, it has raised more than $250 million for the fight against cancer, and has distributed more than 60 million Livestrong wristbands.
Armstrong has been recognized with numerous awards for his achievements. In May 2008 Time magazine named him to the Time 100, a list of the world’s most influential people. For four straight years he was named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year (from 2002 to 2004) and also received ESPN’s ESPY Award for Best Male Athlete (from 2003 to 2006). Sports Illustrated magazine named him Sportsman of the Year in 2002.
“We are delighted to have Lance Armstrong speak on the closing day of the NACS Show and deliver a strong motivational message about how he overcame incredible adversity and ultimately led a team that accomplished something that is unlikely to ever happen again,” said Jay Ricker, NACS vice chairman of Convention and Events and president of Ricker Oil Co.
While retired from cycling, Armstrong remains incredibly competitive. He was among the top 300 finishers in the 2007 New York City Marathon.
