Jeff Miller Elected to Chair the National Association of Convenience Stores

ALEXANDRIA, VA Jeff Miller, president of Norfolk, Virginia-based Miller Oil Co. Inc., was named 2010-11 chairman of the board of the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) on Oct. 8 at the conclusion of the association’s NACS Show in Atlanta. The NACS Show is ranked as one of the 50 largest annual tradeshows in the United States.

A member-driven organization, NACS is lead by its 30-member Board of Directors.

Miller has been a member of the NACS Board of Directors since 2004. Most recently, he served as the NACS vice chairman-treasurer, overseeing the association’s financial plan.

Prior to that, he was vice chairman of NACSPAC. Miller also served three terms as NACS vice chairman of member services. In 2000, he served on the inaugural NACS Coca-Cola Research Council (now called the NACS/ Coca-Cola Retailing Research Council).

Miller Oil Co. was founded in 1977 by Miller’s father, A.C. “Gus” Miller. The company operates 36 Miller’s Neighborhood Markets, and supplies fuels to nearly 100 dealer sites in Virginia and Florida. Miller Oil Co. also operates Miller’s Home Heating Oil, Miller’s Heating and Air-Conditioning and Miller’s Commercial Fuels.

Miller entered the family business in 1981, after working five years in the restaurant business in Washington, D.C. At Miller Oil, he worked in various capacities in each division, ultimately leading up to his present position of president.

Miller earned a B.A. in international relations and economics from American University.

In 2009, U.S. convenience stores had $511 billion in sales – nearly equal the sales of the country’s supermarkets ($556 billion) and the predicted 2010 sales in restaurants ($580 billion), and far greater than and drug stores ($218 billion). Overall, convenience stores accounted for one of every $28 spent in the country last year. In addition, there are 144,541 convenience stores in the United States – one per every 2,100 people. Other competing channels have far fewer stores, according to Nielsen TDLinx, such as supermarkets (35,612 stores), drug stores (37,654 stores) and mass merchandiser/dollar stores mass dollar stores (27,247).
