Susser, Kum & Go CEOs to Lead NACS Show Panel

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Sam Susser, president and CEO of Susser Holdings Corp. (Corpus Christi, Texas), and Kyle Krause, president and CEO of Kum & Go LC (West Des Moines, Iowa), have been announced as panelists for the Oct. 7 NACS Show General Session “A Tale of Two Retailers.”

The session, presented by NACS Magazine, is part of the annual industry-focused Business Strategy Day at the NACS Show. The day’s General Session presentations also will include the Ideas 2 Go video presentation, a fast-paced video tour of some of the most interesting, creative and potentially profitable ideas in the convenience and petroleum retailing industry.

The panel presentation will take a close look at how two successful companies continue to innovate and grow their customer bases, with practical examples for other retailers to consider. The session will be moderated by Sonja Hubbard, CEO of E-Z Mart Stores Inc. (Texarkana, Texas).

The roots of Susser Holdings Corp. go back to 1938 when Susser’s parents took over the operation of two local service stations. In that first year they sold 360,000 gallons of gasoline. Today, Susser Holdings Corp. operates over 510 convenience stores under the Stripes and Town & Country brands. The company also supplies fuel to 372 branded and unbranded dealers, five unattended fueling facilities and a significant number of other commercial customers. It is the largest non-refiner fuel distributor in Texas. Susser has served as president and CEO of the company since 1992 and as director since 1988. He also serves as a director of a number of charitable, educational and civic organizations.

Since its founding in 1959, Kum & Go has grown to be the third largest private owner/operator of convenience stores in the country. Today it has 425 stores in 11 states and has annual sales in excess of $2 billion. The company gives back 10 percent of its annual profits to charitable and educational causes and has earned the Outstanding Corporate Philanthropy Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In addition to serving as president and CEO of Kum & Go LC, Krause also is the owner and president of Solar Transport, the largest Iowa-based refined fuel transporter. In 1998, he purchased majority ownership of the Des Moines Menace, a Premier Development League soccer team.

President George W. Bush will be an Oct. 8 Closing General Session speaker and acclaimed food retailer Stew Leonard Jr. will be an Oct. 6 General Session speaker for NACS Show. The NACS Show will take place Oct. 5 to 8 at the Georgia World Congress Center.

More than 23,000 attendees and 1,200 exhibiting companies are expected to attend the NACS Show. Registration is now open at www.nacsshow.com. The early-bird registration deadline is August 13.
