Retailers from around the world are competing for the first International Convenience Retailer Award and the deadline for entries is now closed.
Launched by Insight and NACS, the award has attracted eight stunning entries from around the globe and spanning the continents of Africa, Asia and Europe.
They are:

- Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland, Centra Parnell Street, Dublin
- Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland, Centra Raheen, Limerick
- Pick n Pay - South Africa
- Sainsbury's - UK
- Joint Spar International/Spar China
- Topaz - Ireland

The award, which is sponsored by Imperial Tobacco and Airplay, the C-TV specialist, will be presented during the Insight/NACS Future of International Convenience and Forecourt Retailing event in London next month (September). Click here for further information.
Commenting on the breadth and calibre of the award entries, Insight partner, Dan Munford, said: “We are delighted with the response to this inaugural award. We have received entries from around the world, demonstrating convenience and forecourt retailing is truly global. The strength of the submissions is first class and is certain to deliver a worthy winner of this prestigious new award.”
The award recognises excellence in convenience and forecourt retailing on the international stage.
Retailers were required to submit entries covering six key criteria and photographic and/or video evidence. Examples of each retailer submission are featured below.

The entries are now being judged by our elite panel comprising:
- Raymond Maingard, founder of a leading retail services company in South Africa
- Stephanie Rice, a retail consultant specialising in marketing
Simon Chinn, analyst, Verdict Research
- Dan Munford, partner, Insight Research
- Joe Bona, president, CBX
- David Killeen, ceo Australasian Association of Convenience Stores
- Ramon Kuijpers, international key Accounts manager at Reemtsma Cigarettenfabriken GmbH (Imperial Tobacco)
- Peter Knott, managing director at Airplay
The judges will produce a shortlist of retailers, which will be collated by Fiona Briggs, editor of Global Convenience Store Focus, and Erin Pressley, editor of NACS magazine.
The shortlist will be revealed in the September issue of Global Convenience Store Focus with profiles and pictures of each of the contenders, supported by judges’ comments.
Readers of Global Convenience Store Focus will then be required to vote online for the overall winner of this prestigious new award.
The award will be presented at an industry dinner on 15 September 2009 at Richard Branson's famous Babylon restaurant at the Roof Gardens in Kensington, London.
