Dollar General Adds to Acceptable Payment Options
September 25, 2006

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As of last Friday, September 22, customers nationwide can use their credit card to make purchases at more than 8,000 Dollar General locations in 34 states, reports the Associated Press.

According to the news source, Dollar General has been accepting PIN debit cards since 2003. The company’s new agreement with Visa USA gives store the capability to accept credit cards.

“At Dollar General, our goal is to provide a convenient shopping experience for our busy and value-driven customer,” Dollar General Chairman and CEO David Perdue said in a statement, adding, “Our agreement with Visa positions us to serve a growing number of American consumers who want and expect a variety of payment options.”

Competing discount retailer Family Dollar Stores, with more than 6,100 stores in 44 states, also accepts PIN debit cards but does not take credit cards, notes the AP. Similarly, Dollar Tree Stores, with more than 3,100 stores in 48 states, began accepting both PIN debit and credit cards last year.

Bill Dobbins, vice president of merchant relations at Visa USA, told the AP that more than 6.3 million merchant locations in the U.S. accept Visa payment products.

“Our partnership with Dollar General gives millions of Visa cardholders more locations where they can make convenient purchases and have the opportunity to earn rewards,” Dobbins told the news source, adding, “The dollar store retail segment has been one of the last untapped markets for payment card acceptance.”
