West Coast Cities Tops for Organic Product
October 18, 2007

NEW YORK – Consumers living in San Francisco and Seattle overwhelmingly purchase more organic food products than anywhere else in the U.S.

A recent analysis from Scarborough Research found that 35 percent of Sand Francisco adults used organic foods during the past month, making it the top U.S. city for organic users. Seattle comes in a close second with 32 percent of its residents sampling organic food in the same time frame.

Other cities in the top tier of organic food shoppers include Portland, Denver and San Diego. On the east coast, 26 percent of Washington, D.C., consumers purchased an organic product within the last month. In total, 17 percent of U.S. adult consumers are organic users, according to the study.

"The top five markets for organics consumers have youth, higher than average annual household incomes, and a fitness mentality in common," said Alisa Joseph, vice president, advertiser agency services at Scarborough Research. "The industry should keep its eye on the Southern region of the U.S., as many markets there have a significant presence of organics consumers as well."

Wal-Mart Supercenter is the top grocery store for organic consumers as 29 percent of organic shoppers bought organic food at the store. But the analysis shows that organic consumers are 272 percent more likely than the average consumer to have shopped at Whole Foods during the past week.

Other grocery stores with a market share for organics include Trader Joe's, Safeway and Costco.

"An organic user's local grocery store availability will dictate where they shop. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's have established themselves in the organics market, " said Joseph.
