CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A Tennessee lawmaker wants to introduce legislation that would return the state lottery to “real” drawings instead of computerized ones, LotteryPost.com reports.
“The integrity of our lottery drawings has been compromised in the minds of lottery players,” said House Minority Leader Jason Mumpower, who sits on the lottery oversight committee. “We use the money generated from the lottery to send Tennessee's graduates on to higher education. In order for people to have full confidence in the system and buy tickets, the system needs to change.”
The call for an overhaul of the lottery system comes after three major mistakes within a month’s time. Starting in August, a computer glitch caused problems with the lottery’s Cash 3 and Cash 4 drawings.
A few weeks later, lottery tickets were printed with the wrong jackpot. A week after that, the wrong numbers for Cash 3 and Cash 4 were televised.
Also during that time period, a number of minor errors occurred. In one example, the lottery printed an adult chat line phone number on lottery marketing materials, instead of the lottery’s toll-free number. All these mistakes have shaken consumer confidence in the lottery, Mumpower said.
Retailers like Lora Aguilard of Nashville Discount Tobacco, told a news station that the solution is a return to the old way of lottery drawings. “Everybody believes we should go back to dropping the balls,” she said. “I have some customers that play it religiously, they were playing $40 a day, they're playing $3 now.”
Mumpower plans to introduce legislation in early 2008 to change the lottery’s drawing procedures.
