ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The 24-7 atmosphere of Las Vegas was even more so last week as the convenience and petroleum retailing industry took Las Vegas by storm for the NACS Show 2006. From the General Sessions to educational sessions to the 380,000 square foot expo floor, the NACS Show featured something for everyone. For those who may have missed the exclusive NACS Daily coverage, here is a brief summary of Show highlights:
On Sunday, October 8, the Cool New Products Preview Room opened its doors exclusively to retailers, wholesalers and distributors for a sneak peek at the some of the newest trends, services and products for the industry or making their debut at the NACS Show 2006. Later that evening, the Welcome Reception offered Show attendees a chance to network and catch up with old and new friends, as well as families.
On Monday, October 9, NACS 2005-2006 Chairman Scott Hartman examined convenience retailing trends from around the globe in his Opening General Session address, while NACS President and CEO Hank Armour discussed the industry's critical needs – advocacy, global initiatives and a compelling offer – and what steps NACS is taking to move forward.
How many Show attendees are squares, triangles, circles or squiggles? Opening General Session guest speaker Connie Podesta wrapped up the session with a look at how each individual's preferred geometric shape can give form and meaning to his or her personalities – both professionally and personally.
Attendees hit the Show floor on Monday, which also featured two inaugural events: the Convenience Chef Showdown and the Teen Trendspotters Panel. Tomu Odawara, executive chef, Gourmet Foods (for Famima), took the top prize for his Chicken Korma with Basmati Rice dish during round one of the chef showdown, while the trendspotters made their selections for the hottest new products in the packaged and dispensed beverages (non-alcohol) categories.
On Tuesday, October 10, the Business Strategy Day, kicked off with the debut of Ideas 2 Go 2006, which highlights retailers in action as they demonstrate innovative ideas and how they successfully provide convenience, boost sales and maintain customer loyalty. John Melo, most recently president of U.S. fuels for BP, shared his insights about petroleum retailing with attendees during a Tuesday presentation on retail business strategy. Tuesday's Show floor events featured round two of the Convenience Chef Showdown and the teen trendspotter's top picks in the candy and snack foods categories.
On Wednesday, October 11, the NACS Show 2006 came to its conclusion. During the Closing General Session, Scott Hartman passed the gavel to Sam Turner as the 2006-2007 Chairman of the association. Turner then addressed attendees on NACS priorities for the coming year, including credit card fees, motor fuels issues, healthcare and technology. Guest speaker General Tommy Franks (Ret.) took the stage and shared his unique perspective on global and current U.S. issues, as well as his experiences during 38 years of service in the U.S. military as a leader and manager.
