BETHESDA, Md. – Balducci’s Food Lover’s Market, a high-end grocery store, has opened an 800-square-foot store at the Delta terminal (Terminal 2) at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The airport store features self-service units that offer salads, sandwiches, yogurts, pastries and fruit. Breakfast egg meals and hot pressed sandwiches are available to order at the service counter, according to The New York Times.

The Balducci’s market is one of several new concessions at the airport thanks to a new food-and-beverage contract with Bethesda-based HMSHost, the world’s largest travel dining and shopping operator. HMSHost now operates more than 31 dining facilities at airports in the New York area.

“Many airlines think that what we eat and drink near their gates – or bring on board – is an integral part of a traveler’s overall experience,” said Joe Waller, vice president of business development for HMSHost, in a statement. “Carriers want the airport food and beverage offerings to reflect their brands and their passengers’ tastes.”

The NACS Ideas 2 Go 2004 looked at how retailers are considering new locations, including airports.
