AUSTIN, TEXAS – State legislators agreed to a plan that will fix the state’s unconstitutional school finance system, sending a five-piece package to Gov. Rick Perry (R) for his signature, reports the Associated Press.
Of the five measures, one piece of legislation would boost the state’s current cigarette excise tax by $1 per pack in January 2007. The current cigarette excise tax in Texas is 41 cents per pack.
The governor can either veto or sign the legislation, or the legislation will become law without his signature. The five-piece package is in response to a Texas Supreme Court order to fix the system before June 1, writes the AP.
