JERUSALEM, ISRAEL -- Motorists in Israel will soon have the option of filling up at self-service dispensers, reports United Press International.
On April 2, the price for self-service gasoline in Israel will become the official price, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of National Infrastructures.
“This is the third and final step in a ministry push to mandate the option for self service. It is an effort by the government to encourage competition in a market controlled by a few conglomerates and barons,” notes the news source.
Eli Ronen, director general of the National Infrastructures Ministry, told the Jerusalem Post there is no doubt offering self-service “will increase competition of petrol prices” and lead to “a drop in fuel prices.”
Beginning April 2, every gasoline station in Israel will be required by law to offer at least one self-service dispenser at a discount compared to the price offered at full-service pumps. Stations without a self-service option will be required to charge self-service prices, notes the newspaper.
