A Jolt Without Liquid

EDINBORO, Pa. – If getting caffeine from coffee isn’t enough, there are new ways to help consumers get boost.

Convenience stores are selling caffeine-added products such as lollipops that come in cappuccino and Irish creme flavors, caffeinated gum, mints with a caffeine equivalent of one regular soft drink and sunflower seeds infused with caffeine, taurine and ginseng. There are also dissolvable strips similar to breath-freshening strips that have a caffeine equivalent of a cup of coffee.

Jolynn Agostini, an assistant professor of nursing at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, told The Associated Press that studies show caffeine can provide stamina and enhance moods, but people should read labels carefully and be sure not to overdo it. “I think the most important thing for people is to look at the label and find out how much caffeine is in these products. …Some people get a bigger jolt out of it than others. You need to get to know your own acceptable levels.”
