WICHITA – Convenience and liquor stores in the state's largest city were busy with beer sales this past Sunday, with some retailers saying that their sales rivaled those of Saturday, reports the Associated Press.
“We had people waiting at noon and opened early. We didn’t know what to expect. We’ve been busy,” liquor store owner Shelly Breault told the AP.
In April, the Wichita City Council approved the Sunday sale of alcohol, but the law hit a roadblock when opponents of the measure attempted to force a citywide vote that would keep the city dry on Sundays. Kansas cities and counties have been voting to allow Sunday sales since 2005 and more than 50 cities had lifted their bans by 2006, reports the AP.
Customers such as Brad Sommerfield are welcoming the ability to purchase beer on Sundays. “It’s nice to mow and trim your grass on Sunday and buy a beer,” he said.
