Church Group Gives Away Gasoline
July 18, 2006

COVINA, Calif. – Customers who stopped by a local Valero store in Covina, California, were greeted with a little bit of salvation at the pump in the form of a gasoline discount.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune writes that members of the Covina Vineyard Community Church raised $5,000 to sponsor the event, enabling them to give away $10 worth of free gasoline to Covina residents in return for the opportunity to “remind customers that God loves them.” During the event, church members helped customers pump gasoline and kept motorists organized while handing out business cards with information about the church.

“It's a practical way to share God's love with no strings attached and to do it in an inoffensive manner,” Covina Vineyard Community Church Pastor Alan Stretch told the newspaper, adding, “Doing something like this also allows us to live our Christian life and show what it's about.”

Brandon Weber, an office administrator at the church, commented that plans for the gasoline giveaway had been in the works for about four months. “Some people came here thinking, ‘free gas, [and] okay, what's the catch?’ There's no catch and we're not necessarily pushing our church. We're promoting God,” he said.

The newspaper writes that some customers were drawn into the Valero station by church members holding up signs on the side of the road that read, “$10 free gas,” while others read about the giveaway in the local paper.

“We were just passing by and saw the sign,” said one resident, adding, “I was told that they were involved with the church and I, too, am involved with my church. It's good to know someone cares. It's real inspiring.”
