OLATHE, Kan. – Garmin International Inc., a member of the Garmin Ltd. group of companies that designs and manufactures navigation, communication and information devices enabled by global positioning systems (GPS) technology, is expanding its mobile phone services to include content on fuel prices, weather conditions and forecasts, and traffic information.
According to a press release, the new real-time content will be available to Garmin Mobile users in July. Garmin Mobile is currently available on select Sprint and Nextel cell phone models.
Garmin Mobile’s fuel locator allows users to find retail locations selling gasoline at the lowest price in a specific area. Users can navigate to the location by following the service’s voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions. The content displayed on their cell phone shows information such as the distance to the retail location and fuel prices, which are based on the location’s recent credit card transactions as tracked and aggregated by the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS).
“Since launching Garmin Mobile, we have introduced an entirely new audience to GPS navigation,” said Gary Kelley, Garmin's vice president of marketing, adding, “We believe this new expanded content makes Garmin Mobile even more appealing because it lets drivers make educated decisions about their everyday commuting activities--from routing around traffic to finding the least expensive fuel.”
