FARGO, N.D. – It’s goodbye to Krispy Kremes for North Dakotans, reports the Grand Forks Herald.
The recent closing of North Dakota’s only Krispy Kreme shop in Fargo means the doughnuts are no longer being made available at several retail outlets, such as seven Valley Dairy convenience stores in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. The retail chain previously stocked Krispy Kreme in its five convenience stores that also sell gas. Two Holiday Stationstores in Grand Forks also stopped carrying Krispy Kremes, notes the newspaper.
In Fargo, fans of Krispy Kreme doughnuts lined up to get the last ones before the store closed for good at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
“I came to pay my respects to Krispy Kreme,” said one loyal customer, who purchased four-dozen doughnuts to give to neighbors and family.
Carol Budde and Jack Caplewe traveled to the store from Winnipeg “just to say we were here on the very last day,” they said.
However, North Dakotans aren’t going to be left without doughnuts just because Krispy Kreme closed up shop. Local business Sandy’s Donuts is doing well, owner Mark Ostlund told the newspaper, adding, that he didn’t think there is any problem with the doughnut industry.
Winston Salem-based Krispy Kreme has been straddling, with franchisees closing 25 stores in the first nine months of fiscal year 2008, notes the newspaper.
