Georgia Governor Voices Position on Sunday Sales
January 23, 2007

ATLANTA – Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue said during a radio interview that he does not support Sunday beer and wine sales at grocery and convenience stores, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Perdue said that the proposal before the General Assembly "is going to have a tough time. I don't support that. I don't know whether it will pass the legislature or not, but it will have a pretty tough time getting the last vote," reports the newspaper.

The governor hinted that he will veto such legislation if it lands on his desk. "Think of it this way," the governor added during the radio interview. "It really helps you plan ahead for the rest of your life—buying on Saturday, rather than Sunday. Time management."

However, Perdue did not clarify why he is opposed to Sunday sales and his aides also declined to elaborate, the newspaper reports.

Jim Tudor, president of the Georgia Association of Convenience Stores, told the newspaper that he was not discouraged by Perdue's remarks. "He will have the final say, there is no question about it," Tudor said. "We have no reason to believe this is the final say on the bill. The issue is still very early in the process. There is no question Georgians want this."
