ATLANTA, Ga. – McDonald’s is testing the concept of selling noncarbonated packaged beverages at two stores, one in college Station, Texas, the other in Kansas City, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The concept is intriguing on two fronts. First, these packaged beverages include products from Pepsi, such as Mountain Dew, and McDonalds’ sells more Coke products than any other restaurant chain. Second, the concept includes new beverages, such as sports and energy drinks, and features a cooler case similar to those in convenience stores.
In addition to Mountain Dew, the drinks sold in the Kansas City test location are Red Bull, Gatorade, Propel Fitness Water, Lipton tea and Tropicana Pure Premium juice, reports the newspaper.
"Consumers want the brands they know, and they want them wherever they are buying,” Morningstar analyst Matthew Reilly told the newspaper.
"We've certainly been encouraged by what we're hearing from customers, but it's still too early to speculate about test results or whether the tests will be expanded," McDonald's spokeswoman Danya Proud told the newspaper. However, the newspaper noted that McDonald’s has built drink coolers into the walls in some stores.
A Morgan Stanley research report recently found that 62 percent of consumers said they would drink different beverage (such as sports and energy drinks) at quick service restaurants if given the choice.
