Maine Governor Proposes Cigarette Tax Increase
January 16, 2007

LEWISTON, Maine – Maine Gov. John Baldacci has proposed raising the state’s tax on cigarette by another dollar, which would bring the state tax to $3 per pack, the Associated Press reports.

Maine’s cigarette tax jumped a dollar two years ago. If approved, the new increase would take effect on July 1, making Maine’s state cigarette tax the nation’s highest.

Baldacci’s proposal includes a $1 million increase to fund smoking-cessation programs.
