Indiana Lottery Sued Over ‘Cash Blast’ Game
January 10, 2007

INDIANAPOLIS – Two men, one of which spent $40,000 on lottery tickets, filed a lawsuit against the Indiana Lottery claiming that the lottery overstated the number and amount of prizes in its “Cash Blast” game, the Indianapolis Star reports.

The lawsuit, filed Friday, seeks class-action status because the lottery admitted to misrepresenting the number and amount of prizes available in a scratch-off game. The game stated there would be seven grand prizes of $250,000 each, plus several lesser prizes of up to $10,000 each.

However, last July, the lawsuit alleges that after 5 million tickets were sold, the lottery reduced the number and amount of prizes over the course of two weeks. “It was because the prizes never existed,” Richard Waples, attorney for the plaintiffs, told the newspaper. “About 60,000 prizes weren’t available that people were buying these tickets for.”

On its Web site, the Indiana Lottery admitted to listing more cash prizes than were available. The lottery says the problem stems from a printing mistake a vendor made that affected up to 2.5 million tickets. Despite the error, the lottery says that the odds of winning stayed the same.
