NACS 2005 Compensation Survey Report Now Available
January 12, 2006

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- NACS recently released The Convenience Store Industry’s Compensation Survey Report including Benefits for 2005, which provides a snapshot of compensation for 14 different job positions, as well as turnover for six store-level and supervisory positions. Healthcare costs and medical coverage are also addressed in the report.

The latest report features data collected from 148 respondent companies reporting compensation levels as of June 30, 2005.

The Compensation Survey Report examines annual base salaries and the dollar value of all additional compensation for positions including: president, top operations position, top finance position, top gasoline operation position, top marketing position, top human resource position, merchandise/category manager, regional manager, zone manager, district manager, supervisor/field representative, store manager, assistant store manager and store cashier/sales associate.

In addition, the 2005 report includes updated metrics on benefits, including total employee healthcare costs, medical and dental coverage, 401(k) plans, life insurance and pension plans.

“Specific benchmarks in this report can significantly assist retailers by improving their ability to make better managerial decisions in the area of compensation,” said Bob Swanson, NACS director of research and statistics.

“Because total labor costs are by far the single largest component of direct store operating expenses--almost 39 percent of gross profit dollars in 2004, according to the 2005 NACS State of the Industry report--it is critical to examine and benchmark your costs to those of the industry as a whole. This latest compensation report not only examines executive-level, operating-level and store-level compensation by company size, it also looks at store-level compensation by region,” Swanson said.

The complete 30-page report is available electronically as a PDF file and can be purchased by NACS members for $75; for non-members the price is $150. To order, contact Trisha Frazier at (703) 518-4291 or e-mail tfrazier@nacsonline.com.
