Kraft Increases LiveActive Line
December 26, 2007

CHICAGO -- Kraft Foods Inc. is increasing the number of foods in its LiveActive line that promotes healthy digestion, Reuters reports. But some analysts wonder if consumers will buy products with prebiotic fiber.

Starting next month, Kraft will debut new Crystal Light drink mix sticks and a new breakfast cereal with prebiotic fiber added, Amy Wagner, senior director of integrated marketing at Kraft, said.

By promoting the health and wellness attributes of its products, Kraft has had success with LiveActive cheese snacks and cottage cheese. However, these new products have prebiotic fiber that helps to promote regularity, not the probiotic cultures more familiar to consumers. “Good bacteria” probiotics aid in digestion, while prebiotic fiber feed the probiotics.

“Prebiotic, probiotic, I think that’s a meaningless distinction for consumers,” said Bob Goldin, executive vice president at Technomic, a food and restaurant research and consulting firm.

Probiotic-enhanced foods and vitamins is an increasing market; sales reached $954 million in the 52 weeks ending Dec. 1, which is 42.2 percent higher than a year earlier, according to the Nielsen Co. Of that, yogurt and yogurt drinks accounted for $729.8 million, Nielsen said.
