LONDON – Tesco, already the largest food retailer in the United Kingdom, is now making strides to become the largest retailer of “non-food” goods by year’s end, reports RetailWeek.com.
According to Verdict Research, Tesco is on its way to surpass Argos as the UK’s leading retailer of non-food products.
“Capitalizing on their low-price reputations and overriding convenience, grocers’ non-food ambitions now stretch to almost every area of the retail market. At the same time, they are raising their game in terms of choice, display and store layout. Whereas, in the past, grocers have typically taken a fairly opportunistic approach in their non-food development, they are now placed to take on specialist retailers head-to-head,” said Verdict Senior Retail Analyst Alastair Lockhart.
The news source writes that Tesco is growing its non-food offers by dedicating more floor space through mezzanines, store extensions and by opening more of its Extra format stores. The retailer is also expanding its online retail offer and introducing in-store catalogs.
Meanwhile, as the British retailer prepares to enter the U.S. market, TheSun.com reports that Las Vegas could become home to Tesco stores. Local real estate agents told the news source the Tesco has been looking at sites to set up shop in Las Vegas. Tesco also registered two U.S. subsidiaries, Tesco Stores West and Tesco Stores Holdings, in Nevada, California and Arizona.
