We Could Feed Michael Phelps
Our industry gets a bum rap for selling what some may consider “junk food,” but there is a man swimming his double-jointed arms and legs off in Beijing who could easily find a steady diet of enough carbohydrate-rich foods to sustain his 12,000-calorie a day diet by walking into his local convenience store.
 
If you’re watching the Olympics, then you probably already heard or read what Michael Phelps puts down in one day, on top of his grueling training schedule. He consumes more calories in one day than I do in one week. In fact, the only food item I have in common with his regime is the two cups of coffee. Here is his “diet”:
  • Breakfast: Three fried egg sandwiches with cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, fried onions and mayonnaise; three chocolate-chip pancakes; a five-egg omelet; three sugar-coated slices of French toast; a bowl of grits; two cups of coffee
  • Lunch: one pound of pasta, two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread and energy drinks
  • Dinner: on pound of pasta, one large pizza and energy drinks
Not many human beings could endure this kind of diet without the type of training and exercise athletes like Phelps are used to, but there are many active people who need a good carb/calorie boost to keep up with the Joneses. When I finish a 5 to 6 mile run, chocolate milk and a Clif bar are my go-to recovery foods — two products I purchase at the convenience store by my house.
 
During our "Ideas 2 Go" shoot in Tulsa this summer, a certain CEO of QuikTrip teased me about being a “metabolic wonder,” which isn’t at all true (he’s just jealous). But I, like many health-conscious adults, rely on exercise to stay fit. And trust me — there is no way I could keep up with my running partners if my diet lacked a decent amount of carbohydrates.
 
So here’s to Michael Phelps — an American hero for bringing home more gold medals than any other Olympic athlete in history; an inspiration to anyone who wishes they could eat anything they want without gaining a single pound. And without the foods Phelps relies on — the ones you can find in your local convenience store — his accomplishments in Beijing might not have been possible.
Sustainability, Energy Efficiency and Green, Oh My!
Whatever you want to call it (probably green baby puke by now), eco-friendly business solutions are here to stay. Even if you're sick of hearing about "green," there are some great strategies that you can implement now, or incorporate into a long-term plan that will save your business valuable dollars, reduce utility costs, and ultimately create good will among your employees and customers for doing the right thing.
 
NACS is currently developing a toolkit that will help retailers develop eco-friendly blueprints by identifying best practices in sustainable retailing -- largely through case studies that highlight what global retail leaders in Europe and the United States are doing now to address these issues. Be on the lookout for the NACS Green Toolkit at the upcoming NACS Show. And while you're there, be sure take a look around the Congreenience Store and see what energy efficient and eco-friendly products and services are available to your stores.

Finding Opportunties
Some interesting observations came out of Orlando at the National Coalition of Associations of 7-Eleven Franchisees 33rd Annual Convention and Trade Show.

First, apparently the bigger and fuller the bag an attendee had, the less certain attendees seemed to care about what the exhibitors could do to help them grow their business. The focus of these individuals seemed a bit off to me. Unfortunately, this is also common practice of some participants at the NACS Show, particularly before the expo closes. If you add up the dollar amount of the free stuff, the average cost might be around $60, and if you add in the hotel room rate plus the costs of the event, the shopping trip doesn't exactly sound free to me.

But I don't think that the large majority of folks at the 7-Eleven show disregard their business -- in fact, I believe that many retailers are relying on 7-Eleven Corporate to help grow their business. With 7-Eleven going to an all franchisee model, retailers are going to have to do a lot on their own to grow their business. This is going to be an opportunity for the regional groups and NACS to educate these retailers and help them grow their businesses.

The leaders of the regional franchisee groups are supporters of NACS and want to work with us more...and NACS needs to take advantage of this is opportunity to reach out to the 7-Eleven franchisees. Overall, the event was a success and I made some good contacts to follow up with to help grow our NACS State of Industry report.

Minimum Wage Increases Today
Effective today, July 24, the federal Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) minimum wage rises again - this time from $5.85 to $6.55 per hour. This is the second step of the three-stage increase that became law last year.  
 
The next increase will be on July 24, 2009, and the rate will go to $7.25 per hour. Even employers who customarily pay more than the FLSA’s minimum wage should consider the potential ripple effects of this change.

I'm Rich!
One of our goals on the road trip was to talk to consumers and hear what they had to say about convenience stores. We always made a point to ask them about their perceptions on retail gas margins and credit card fees.
 
Though not scientific by any stretch, it seems that the consumers we spoke with think the average retail margin per gallon of gas is about 75 cents. I never realized I had it so good! I’m going to take some time to kick back, relax, and shop for something to spend all my new found wealth on.
 
Of course we all know this is not true - the reality is that retailers are making about 2 to 3 cents per gallon after expenses, including credit card fees. To help educate consumers about this reality, I hope you all have your pumptoppers up or at least on order...
Home Sweet Home
As fun and educational as this trip has been, it felt great to finally see the sights of Chicago. Today we took some time to shoot some of the landmarks of the city, and take a quick tour of the facility at the Navy Pier where we will be holding the NACS Show Welcome Reception. It is an amazing roof top space with views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. It will have been five years since NACS was last here. Besides all that is going on at the Show (and we have an outstanding Show planned) this city has so much to offer. And in early October the weather in Chicago is ideal. Early October? That is only 75 days or so away. Have you registered yet?
 
Well, it's now time for home.
 
There has been lots of talk lately about the all the difficulties and inconveniences with air travel in the U.S. this summer. For all those folks complaining (and I have been one of them) I have just two letters for you: RV. After 3,000 miles on the road, a security line at the airport was a walk in the park. A 30-minute flight delay? More time to relax and watch CNN Airport Edition. At the end of the day it's all about perspective.
 
And after 10 days, 3,000 miles and numerous c-stores along the way, I have been reminded just how wonderful, diverse and robust an industry we have. Take the time to post your thoughts on this trip and we took f forward to seeing you in October.

He’s Got the Power
We always try to bring a range of ideas in “Ideas to Go,” from the really unique and far out, to something just about everyone can use in their business. Our last store stop in the Chicago suburbs is a “proof of concept” store where Sam Odeh has tried to demonstrate all you can accomplish in convenience retailing and foodservice when you are working with a lot and building that were sized for a 1980s gas and c-store. You will enjoy seeing all they have accomplished in a relatively small store size.

Glad to Know You Are Reading!
Okay, I know that at least some of you are reading this blog as we got a call from Rob Forsythe at MotoMart while we were on the road. He just opened a new store two weeks ago in St. Louis and he invited us by for a tour. You will see the details on “Ideas to Go,” but I have to tell you this is a very well done store and a very interesting company. A 45-minute conversation with Rob at his store and I have four ideas I cannot wait to share with my people when I get back to Denver.
 
Now that we're ending our trip, I have to say that it sounded like a good idea to hit the road for 10 days, but we are getting a bit road weary. I cannot begin to tell you how much joy a clean, well stocked c-store with a friendly staff and clean restrooms brings to folks who have been on the road for days. Being in our stores every day, I think we sometimes lose perspective as to how we can bring some simple pleasure to our customers’ hectic day.
