Industry Engagement is Crucial!
The debate on automatic temperature compensation (ATC) continues despite the decision by the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) in January to delay a vote on the topic. The Conference continues to solicit information on ATC and the regional associations continue to debate the issue at their meetings.
To date, the Central Weights and Measures Association and the North East Weights and Measures Association have met and essentially remain consistent with their past positions—unconvinced of the economic value of pursuing a policy to adjust volumes with variations in temperature. But that does not mean our work is over.
Meanwhile, the California Energy Commission (CEC) continues to develop its statutorily mandated study on the costs and benefits of ATC and many of our colleagues are working very closely with the CEC on that study. However, there remain some concerns about the amount of effort being invested to properly evaluate the consumer benefit, or lack thereof, of such equipment.
To ensure that all aspects of the issue are fully considered, NACS, NATSO, PMAA and SIGMA are working together in an effort to assemble relevant facts and information that could be presented to both the CEC and the NCWM to further articulate the relationship between costs and benefits of current ATC proposals.
