McMillan | Doolittle

Ted Zittell consults internationally to market leaders who seek his expertise in retail formats and trends, branding systems, marketing communications and design. A partner in Chicago-based McMillan|Doolittle, he is also the principal of his own business, Ted Zittell & Associates Inc. of Toronto, Canada, where he lives with his family.

As senior partner and strategic counsel in the former Watt Design Group for 17 years, Ted developed and executed segmentation, brand and communications strategies at leading retail, consumer product, and service clients around the globe.

Doug Anthony
Vice President
New Business Development, Tim Hortons

 

Doug Anthony has spent 17 years with Tim Hortons, responsible for the development of non-traditional locations across Canada and the United States, which now number approximately 900 units. This count includes the Tim Hortons/Imperial Oil relationship, which Anthony and his team have helped to grow into a 350-unit partnership. He was a key player in the development and opening of the non-traditional location in Kandahar, Afghanistan, which opened in July 2006 and now serves more than 10,000 international soldiers and support staff.

Leocadio de Almeida Antunes Filho

Ipiranga Produtos de Petroleo S/A

Leocadio de Almeida Antunes Filho joined Ipiranga in 1987 and has served in several areas including the fertilizer, fuels marketing and distribution. He is a Board Member of Sindicom, the Brazilian Fuels Marketing and Distribution Association and IBP, the Brazilian Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Institute. Antunes is currently Chair of the International Committee.

Henry O. Armour

Henry Armour grew up working in his family’s retail automotive and wholeale transportation business. In 1983 he founded the West Star Corporation which grew to include nearly 60 NOQ! Convenience stores, truck stops and quickservice restaurants until he sold the company in 2004. Armour has served as the NACS President and CEO since 2005. He also serves on the NACS/Coca-Cola Retailing Research Council.

James Blakelock
Group Head of Regulation
British American Tobacco 

 

James Blakelock joined the British American Tobacco group in 1991. While working with the Brand Marketing team, he was based in the Middle East, Cambodia and Russia. In 2000, he moved to the Central Corporate & Regulatory Affairs team at BAT’s head office in London, where he was responsible for strategy, planning and the establishment of social reporting. He has since worked on similar roles in the Middle East and Malaysia. In August 2006, Blakelock returned to London in the Central Corporate & Regulatory Affairs function as head of strategy and planning and career development. In April 2008, the role expanded to his current position as group head of regulation.

Edward Burcher Senior Director of Foodservice
Suncor Energy Products, Inc.

Ed Burcher has more than 28 years of experience in retail operations and marketing. His current role is leading the offer development and implementation of Neighbours for Petro-Canada. Previous include leading the operations support group and the recruiting and training processes for the 500-plus stores. Prior to Petro-Canada, he spent about 18 years at Wawa in the United States. In addition to operational roles, he was instrumental in developing Wawa’s fresh food and foodservice offers.

John Clayton
Vice President of Corporate Affairs
Imperial Tobacco Canada

John Clayton joined British American Tobacco’s (BAT) Canadian subsidiary, Imperial Tobacco Canada, in June 2008, where he is responsible for the company’s government and regulatory affairs, anti-illicit trade program, external relations and corporate communications. Prior to joining Imperial Tobacco Canada, John spent four years at BAT’s head office in London. Prior to his career at BAT, he managed Japanese government relations for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ). He speaks fluent Japanese and has masters in East Asian Studies from Indiana University.

Frank Gleeson

Frank Gleeson joined Topaz from Statoil Ireland Limited having previously held the position of vice president of retail. He has spent most of his career in the retail sector as operations director at O’Brien’s Off Licence Group and as group sales manager at Xtravision Plc. A graduate of the Irish Management Institute, Gleeson is an International Committee member and chairman of the NACS/Coca-Cola Retailing Research Council. He is also a member of the Irish Institute of Directors and is chairman of Parnell's GAA club.

Arnold Kimmel

Quickie Convenience Stores 

 

Arnold Kimmel opened his first convenience store in 1973. Today, his company employs more than 500 associates and operates 56 stores within a 100-mile radius of Ottawa. Prior to founding Quickie Convenience Stores, he served as director of marketing for Pure Spring Canada Limited, a division of Crush Beverages. Deeply involved in the convenience store industry, Kimmel has served as president of the Ontario Convenience Stores Association and currently serves as the vice chair of the Canadian Convenience Stores Association. Kimmel served on the NACS Board of Directors.

Dan Munford

Insight Research UK

Dan Munford is a Partner and co-owner of U.K.-based convenience retail specialists Insight Research. A British and International History graduate, Dan now spends much of his time travelling the world tracing the development of the very latest retail formats.

He is an international retail expert and regular speaker at international convenience industry conferences and has 14 years experience in the trade.

Nicholas Scherzer

Insight Research and Insight Conferences Ltd.

 

Prior to joining Insight in 2009, Nicholas Scherzer spent 11 years with the SPAR Group of South Africa. He has extensive knowledge of the operational issues and the dynamics of retail organizations and experience in a wide range of retail issues, including format development and design and category management. He is responsible for operating Insight’s store review business and works on Insight and NACS events and projects with U.K. and international clients.

Matthew Thornton
President and CEO
Thorntons Inc.

Matthew Thornton is responsible for leading Kentucky’s largest privately held corporation, which owns and operates 170 gasoline and convenience stores, seven ethanol bulk plants and one fuel terminal. The company also distributes 100 percent of its fuel through a wholly owned subsidiary, Thornton Transportation, and distributes fresh sandwich and bakery products through another wholly owned subsidiary, Fresh Serve Bakeries. The company is an ongoing member of Forbes magazine’s list of largest privately held companies. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1993 with a B.S. in finance and serves on the NACS Board of Directors.

Warren Wilmot

7-Eleven Stores Pty. Ltd.

Warren Wilmot  is the CEO of 7-Eleven Stores Pty. Ltd., where he oversees the operations of more than 370 convenience stores. Prior to 7-Eleven, he spent nine years with the Pizza Hut group, worked for various restaurant groups, and worked in Australia and the United States on farms, driving trucks and picking fruit. He also serves on the NACS Board of Directors and the International Committee, is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.
