The Rise of Connected Coffee

Bluetooth and mobile app technologies are making their way into home espresso super automatic machines.

NEW YORK – Would a Bluetooth-enabled espresso maker be worth $2,500 to the daily $1.49 c-store coffee consumer? It would take about five years to pay off, but specialty coffee makers were a hot ticket item during the holidays, giving home brewers barista-style cups of Joe that rival big chain beverages.

Forbes reports that the Saeco GranBaristo Avanti by Philips comes under a class of machines called super automatics, “because they do everything for you—from grinding your favorite beans to pumping water over them at the appropriate pressure to make an espresso. The machine can even rinse the entire brewing apparatus when it’s done, so all you have to worry about is keeping the machine full of water and beans to enjoy coffee at the push of a button.”

The price tag may cause some consumers to balk, especially if frothy cappuccinos aren’t their cup of tea. Super automatic coffee makers currently on the market can range from $300 for a low-end machine, $2,500 for a mid-range machine, and up to $6,000 for a high-end machine, notes the news source.

The Saeco machine, however, differentiates itself from others because it comes with a Bluetooth radio and a mobile app that offers users the ability to order and customize one of 16 pre-determined drinks. With some basic practice (such as making sure a cup is underneath the dispenser), users could active the machine to begin brewing before they get out of bed and save their customizations for future use.

“The need to order drinks via a device makes the Bluetooth almost feel like a gimmick, although if Philips eventually connects the coffee maker to other devices in the home, it might become more useful. For example, if the machine were to connect with my fitness tracker to know when I’m awake and warm up the coffee machine while I got ready, that could be very handy,” Forbes writes.
