NEW YORK – McDonald's has been testing Apple's iBeacon technology at 26 Columbus, Georgia, franchise locations with positive results, reports Forbes.

The month-long trial has been “pushing special deals for McChicken Sandwiches and 10-piece Chicken McNuggets,” writes the news source, noting that the promotions have resulted in sales increases of  8% for the McChicken Sandwich and 7.5% for Chicken McNuggets.

“In the [fast food world], these are big numbers,” Robert Hanczor, CEO of San Diego-based iBeacon startup Piper, which made the app for McDonald’s to send the promotions, told the news source. “They saw significant statistical change in consumer behavior.” McDonald’s and Piper are working to bring iBeacon programs to an additional 263 southeast locations.

Beacon technology is relatively new in the retail arena, but gaining traction. NACS Magazine wrote in October that more retailers are exploring how the mobile positioning technology can enhance the shopper experience.
