ONTARIO, Canada – The Sachem & Glanbrook Gazette writes that Tony Yoonsik Lim, owner of Cayuga Variety and Video, believes a recent Ontario government decision is putting convenience store owners at a disadvantage.

Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the government planned to allow 450 supermarkets to sell beer within three years, and 60 of those grocers should have the product on their shelves by the end of 2015.

Lim says that the government’s decision will put other grocery and convenience stores at a disadvantage. “We have more than 1,500 supermarkets in Ontario. Only 450 stores are allowed to sell beer. That’s not fair,” he told the news source. “Also, there are more than 10,000 convenience stores in Ontario, and convenience stores aren’t allowed to sell beer. That’s another unfair thing.”

Lim recently began an online petition at www.change.org, calling on other retailers and supporters to lobby the government for convenience stores to sell beer. The petition has a long way to go to reach 50,000 names.

“In convenience stores, we are allowed to sell lottery tickets and cigarettes, but why not beer?” Lim told the news source. “Is beer a special product? Is it a controled substance? No, it’s not.”
