ATLANTA – Coca-Cola might bring a South American hit to U.S. shores next year, the New York Post reports. Coca-Cola Life, a low-calorie soda sweetened with zero-calorie stevia and sugar, has been very popular in Argentina since its debut earlier this year.

Asked if the company’s U.S. plans concerning Coca-Cola Life, CEO and Chairman Muthar Kent said, “Coke will introduce more products next year,” suggesting that Coca-Cola Life might be one of them.

The soft drink clocks in at 100 calories per 20 ounces, making it fit between Diet Coke (no calories) and regular Coke (250 calories per 12 ounces). The company already has stevia as an ingredient in several U.S. offerings, including Fanta and some non-carbonated drinks.

Both Coke and PepsiCo have been researching alternative sweeteners for low-calorie and diet drinks, as diet soft drink sales begin to slide. Some of the decline has been attributed to consumer concern over aspartame, which the European Union recently announced is safe for consumption. “It is a perception issue,” said Kent.
