California Sales of Plug-In Vehicles on the Rise

New data shows one plug-in purchased for every two hybrids in the state.

LOS ANGELES – A recent news report pointed out the surprising statistic that 10% of cars sold in the state of California were electric vehicles, including battery-electric vehicles (1.5%), plug-in hybrids (1.7%) and conventional hybrids (6.4%).

According to Green Car Reports, this data is interesting because it shows that in the state that has by far the largest impact on “green” cars — and where the Toyota Prius hybrid is the best-selling car among non-truck passenger vehicles, — California car buyers are now purchasing one car with a plug for every two hybrids. It also lends some credence to the notion that plug-in electric cars of all varieties may be usurping hybrids as the green car of choice.

Since being introduced in the United States more than 15 years ago, hybrids have achieved about a 3% market share, although recent reports predict a decline in sales as gas prices continue to fall.
