WASHINGTON – Washington Metro is considering entering into an agreement with a local grocery chain, Giant, to test grocery order lockers at stations in the public transportation system.

If approved by Metro's board, Giant's online grocery delivery service, Peapod, would conduct a six-month pilot program at three Metro stations. During the online checkout process, Metro riders will have the option to choose the station where they pick up their order as well as the time of day most convenient for them based on the test schedule. A Peapod representative will service each location, distributing the orders to Metro riders accordingly.

At the same time, Uber is expanding its grocery delivery service, under the moniker UberEssentials. Originally launched in Washington, D.C., this fall, the expanded program promises to deliver its inventory of grocery and convenience items in 10 minutes or less.
