Parisians Turn to Convenience Stores for Shopping Needs

In the wake of the November attacks, many Paris residents are sticking close to home or going online for purchases.

PARIS – Consumers in Paris are switching to online shopping and local convenience stores in the wake of the November terrorist attacks, Bloomberg Business reports. Many residents are still leery of going to big stores or malls.

For example, Valerie Meyer has changed from shopping at her regular grocery store to picking up items at her neighborhood convenience store. “I don’t want to hang out anywhere that could be a target like a mall,” she said of her changed habits.

Online retailers and convenience stores have indicated an uptick in business in the weeks since the Nov. 13 attacks as residents stick closer to home to shop. “The likely rationale for this growth is consumers wanting to stay away from large hypermarkets, particularly as they are normally attached to malls,” said Bruno Monteyne, a Sanford C. Bernstein analyst.

French chain Casino Guichard-Perrachon SA’s convenience stores have seen more customers and sales since mid-November. “This may, in less than ideal circumstances, mean that Casino can expect a good fourth quarter in its convenience banners,” said Monteyne, who also predicted the change in shopping trends will continue into the new year.
