Understanding Consumers’ Minds

Find out what’s going on in the human mind in this week’s NACS Convenience Matters podcast.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Why do blindfolded taste-test volunteers say that chocolate yogurt tastes like strawberry yogurt? It comes down to psychology, and if their minds think it—they react accordingly.

In the latest Convenience Matters podcast, cohosts Jeff Lenard and Carolyn Schnare of NACS talk about the psychology behind how consumers make decisions, and what convenience retailers can do about it. The featured guest is Adam Brumberg, deputy director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, at Cornell University.

Brumberg’s work may already be familiar to many NASCS Show attendees. He presented findings during the popular “Grow Sales the Healthy Way” education session. And, his team’s research was the basis for the “8 Ideas That Work to Grow Better-for-You Sales” that was a top scan in the Cool New Products Preview Room.

“The podcast gave us a chance to dive deeper into how retailers can better understand human psychology to help increase sales of better-for-you items in stores,” Lenard said.

The NACS podcast can be downloaded on iTunes by searching for Convenience Matters. It also is available at nacsonline.com/podcasts. Since making its debut in February 2016, the program has been downloaded in more than 50 countries.
