ALEXANDRIA, Va. – NACS and PCATS have announced full support of Retail Systems Providers Association’s (RSPA) Special Interest Group proposal to specifically address the unique and daunting concerns of small merchants — the majority of convenience stores — regarding real card data risk reduction and compliance.

“PCI compliance for our average operator is a graduate level science project,” Gray Taylor, executive director of PCATS, told NACS Daily. “The expectation of the card brands is that all merchants protect their products to a level that only the largest merchants can adequately perform.

“Working with concerned associations like RSPA, National Restaurant Association, Merchant Advisory Group and others, we have made inroads with the card brands to modify the approach with small merchants, and this SIG is the venue to determine that approach,” he said. “RSPA’s proposal uses many of the best practices developed within the PCATS Data Security Committee, through years of working with experts and card brands.”

Taylor called on all PCI Participating Organizations to login to the PCI member site to vote for “Best Practices for Small Merchants” SIG by midnight tonight. For more information, click here to view a press release from RSPA.
