New York City Drops Cigarette Display Ban Proposal

Mayor Bloomberg’s administration agrees to drop a display ban proposal from anti-tobacco legislation.

October 29, 2013

NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has scrapped plans from his anti-tobacco legislation for a display ban, the New York Post reports.

The provision would have banned the public display of cigarettes in stores, aimed at reducing smoking among youths.

Administration officials agreed to eliminate the proposal as a compromise with the City Council, which is expected to pass the revised plan later this week.

Other measures in the bill include raising the legal smoking age to 21 from 18 and creating a $10.50 minimum price for cigarette packs, thus eliminating discounted coupons.

Tobacco retailers had argued a display ban would reduce customer traffic and reduce jobs.
