NEW DELHI – India’s Supreme Court ordered earlier this week the regular monitoring and inspection of carbonated soft drinks, Livemint.com reports.

The ruling follows a lawsuit that alleged soft drink manufacturers were concealing the existence of carcinogenic elements in their drinks.

The Supreme Court ordered the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to regularly monitor the chemical additives in carbonated drinks and for companies making carbonated drinks to comply with such regulations.

A representative of the Indian Beverage Association declined comment pending review of the order.

A spokesperson for PepsiCo India said the company complies with all regulatory requirements.

“Consumer safety is paramount to PepsiCo India and all our products conform to both Indian and global quality benchmarks. All our products are compliant with regulatory requirements laid down by the FSSAI, including those pertaining to labeling,” the spokesperson said. “The copy of the order has not yet been released by the honorable Supreme Court. We can comment further only after we receive the copy of the order and have reviewed the same.”
