Asking the Right Foodservice Questions

The eight essential questions every CEO needs to ask.

October 16, 2014

ALEXANDRIA, VA – When it comes to in-store growth opportunities, all signs point to foodservice. New data from the NACS State of the Industry Report ranks foodservice as one of our industry’s fastest growing categories — representing nearly 29% of in-store gross profit dollars for convenience store operators. With shrinking margins across some of the industry’s more traditional performance categories, it can be tempting to focus on the tactical aspects that drive immediate sales. But regardless of tactics, it is essential to understand the factors that lead to long-term success in foodservice.

Asking the right questions is as important as finding the answers. As U2 front-man Bono once said, “We thought we had the answers, but it was the questions we had wrong.” Too often we get hyper-focused on one or two metrics. So what are the “right” foodservice questions? What is it that allows successful CEOs to drive foodservice sales?

Next week, NACS CAFÉ will be hosting a free, one-hour webinar exploring eight questions every CEO should ask about foodservice, including a discussion of how foodservice professionals can help their CEO understand important aspects of convenience foodservice.  The webinar will take place on Monday, October 20, from 1 – 2 pm (EDT) and will include presenters Joe Chiovera, president of XS Solutions Inc.; and Jack Cushman, Ph.D, executive vice president of food services for Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes. Back in April 2011, NACS Magazine talked about the “Chief Foodservice Officer” and still believes that they key to successful foodservice comes from the top down.
