Walmart Plans to Double Beer Sales in Three Years

Having already tripled its total alcohol sales in the past decade, Walmart sees room for far more growth.

NEW YORK — While Walmart is already the nation’s largest beer retailer, having tripled its total alcohol sales in the past decade, the retailer has plans to double existing sales in the next three years, AdAge reports.

"I'm pleased but not satisfied," said chief merchandising and marketing officer Duncan MacNaughton during a presentation at National Beer Wholesalers Association meeting in Las Vegas, adding that the company's goal is to double beer sales in the next three years. "I see it as a layup. My team sees it as a big half-court shot. But I'm telling you, it's there," he said.

To help achieve that goal, Walmart is concentrating on improving its product flow and securing more dedicated storage space for beer. Additionally, earlier this month, it said it would continue steep discounting, selling beer nearly at cost in some stores.

MacNaughton said Walmart would continue its strategy of "price separation," but did not directly address the topic of selling beer nearly at cost. He also said the company has no plans to launch a private-label beer.

He criticized its current inventory of beer displays, characterizing them as “cute.”

"We don't want cute displays, "he said. "We want 'shoppable' displays: item and price and can I get a case off the top. Sometimes we kid ourselves with pretty. Pretty is fun, but I want sales."
