Will Anheuser-Busch InBev Merge With SABMiller?

The merger would have a significant impact on the global market.

ST. LOUIS – This week, Anheuser-Busch InBev confirmed that the company has approached SABMiller’s board of directors on merging the two companies to create a global mega-brewer, Advertising Age reports. However, such a combination would have more of an impact on the global market than on the United States. The news source notes that it’s unlikely the U.S. would approve the merger because of antitrust regulations.

SABMiller does say it has been approached by AB InBev, but emphasized that “no proposal has yet been received and the board of SABMiller has no further details about the terms of any such proposal.” A U.K. analyst for Sanford C. Bernstein wrote, “There are clearly regulatory hurdles that would need to be scaled; in particular, the [U.S. Department of Justice] would almost certainly insist on the disposal of SAB’s stake in MillerCoors” in the United States.

If the merger does happen, the two brewers would practically corner the global market on beer, with dominant brands Bud Light, Coors Light and Miller Lite in their portfolio. Rumors about a possible AB InBev and SABMiller partnership have been percolating since 2011. Stirling pointed out that according to U.K. regulations, AB InBev has less than a month to put forth a formal offer to SABMiller.
