Will $2 Gas Affect CAFE Standards?

NACS podcast questions whether the current fuel efficiency standards will be modified.

September 14, 2016

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The clock is ticking as automakers and the fueling industry look to increase fuel efficiency to 54.5 mpg by the year 2025.

In the new NACS Convenience Matters podcast “Will Fuel Efficiency Standards Survive the Midterm Review?”, co-hosts Jeff Lenard of NACS and John Eichberger of the Fuels Institute discuss the midterm evaluation of the CAFE standards that were developed to require the vehicle fleet to average 54.5 mpg by the year 2025. Recognizing potential changes in the marketplace, a midterm review was part of the initial implementation plan, with discussions opened this summer and a final decision to be announced April 1, 2018.

“The big question is whether these standards should be adjusted in light of new trends related to automobile sales and fuel consumption. A lot has changed since CAFE standards were imposed in 2008 when gas prices topped $4 per gallon,” Lenard said.
