Amazon Tests Restaurant Delivery in Seattle

Service brings competition to Grubhub, Seamless and other start-ups that offer restaurant delivery via mobile apps.

SEATTLE – Amazon.com Inc. announced last week that its Prime Now customers in Seattle can take advantage of a new delivery service for about a dozen local restaurants.

Using the Prime Now mobile app, Seattle customers can view participating restaurants, browse menus, place orders and track the status of their delivery in real time. Once an order is placed, Amazon delivery drivers pick up and deliver the food in an hour or less.

“Prime members can now enjoy food from the Seattle restaurants they love without having to drive all over the city,” said Gus Lopez, general manager, Amazon Restaurants, in a press statement. “For many of these restaurants, this is the first time they are offering delivery, and we are delighted they have chosen to work with us.”

Starting September 8, restaurant delivery on Prime Now became available for select Seattle zip codes. The service offers customers transparent pricing—there are no menu markups or hidden service fees, and delivery on all orders is free for a limited time. Customers pay using the information already stored in their Amazon account and orders are backed by Amazon’s award-winning customer service.

USA Today writes that restaurant delivery puts Amazon on track to compete with companies including GrubHub, Seamless and a growing number of start-ups that provide restaurant delivery through mobile apps. But Amazon has an advantage over the competition, with its extensive tech expertise and access to capital, said Michael Halen, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. "[Amazon] should be able to do this better, and they should be able to roll it out to more cities more quickly," he told the news source.
