LONDON – Bloomberg reports that U.K. supermarket chain Morrisons has a buyer for its M Local convenience stores: Mike Greene, a U.K. retail veteran known for his appearances on “Secret Millionaire.”

Greene, backed by private-equity firm Greybull Capital LLP, will acquire 140 M Local stores for about 25 million pounds ($38 million) in cash, Morrisons said in a statement Wednesday.

Morrisons is selling all but five of its convenience stores, which are either on forecourts or will be converted to small Morrisons supermarkets. “Morrisons learnt much from its entry into the market, but M local was unable to scale," CEO David Potts said in a statement. “We remain open to other opportunities in convenience in the future."

Bloomberg writes that Morrisons’ move goes against the current trend in U.K. retail. Sainsbury is opening new convenience stores, while Booker Group expects to complete its acquisition of the Londis and Budgens chains this month.

The M Local stores will be rebranded as “My Local” under Greene, a former chairman of the Association of Convenience Stores. He has also been active with NACS research and international initiatives and events, including the NACS Show and NACS Global Forum. He is the founder of him! and previously served on the NACS International Committee.
