NASHVILLE, TN - An op-ed in The Tennessean this past weekend, written by Jarron Springer, president of the Tennessee Grocers & Convenience Store Association, extols the high compliance rate of the state??s convenience stores with food quality and safety.

"Grocery and convenience store owners and operators across Tennessee wake up daily with food quality and consumer safety as a top priority," Springer wrote. Springer noted the Tennessee Department of Agriculture conducted 18,419 inspections of more than 9,500 retail food stores in the state between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011, finding a 99 percent passing score compliance rate.

"Tennesseans should know that the industry and regulators work together for the common goal of providing the safest food supply possible," he wrote.

Springer noted the state??s Department of Agriculture posts inspection scores on its website, transparency that "is important to the food industry ?? retail food stores are proud of their work concerning food safety. The current system in Tennessee works well."

"The retail food industry in Tennessee is [providing high quality and safe food] ?? and it??s backed up by a 99 percent compliance rate," Springer concluded.
