Subway is hoping its new garlic bread — and its aroma — will lure customers.

MCLEAN, Va. – Come September 1, Subway will roll out its new garlic bread for sandwiches nationwide, reports USA Today.

“In a nation whose collective taste buds go gaga over the mixing and matching of flavors, garlic bread as a sandwich option could give the nation's largest sandwich chain a serious competitive edge,” writes the newspaper.

The move comes as QSR and fast-casual chains continue the summer of bread wars, such as Wendy’s pretzel rolls and Smashburger’s artisan buns, to name a few.

Subway, which offers five breads at its more than 26,000 U.S. locations, is “widening the options for consumers” with its garlic bread addition to attract business. Garlic bread will launch as a limited-time offer, but could find its way onto the permanent menu, Tricia Hetherington, director of R&D at Subway, told the newspaper.

Recently tested in seven cities, garlic bread “tested higher than some of our best products, " she added.

The garlic bread will be made fresh daily in the stores. Subway is banking on the garlic aroma to stimulate consumer interest, notes the newspaper.
