WASHINGTON – Uber’s influence on the convenience economy is expanding once again, as the rideshare app launches its UberEats food delivery service in the nation’s capital this week. Washington, D.C., is the eighth city to gain the service, joining Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Barcelona.

The UberEats service, which will likely continue expanding to other cities in the near future, allows Uber app users to simply place a meal order with a tap of their Uber app, similar to requesting a ride. In Washington, UberEats will deliver lunch weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a promise of delivery within 10 minutes. Unlike other food delivery models that allow users to select from a wide variety of foods and vendors, the service has a set, limited menu that Uber has pre-arranged with local restaurants. UberEats’ opening day lunch menu included Italian, Asian and Indian menu options, for instance, with menus changing daily.

According to the Washington Post, Uber has said that it's seeing high demand for the service in all the cities where it’s offered, though there have been some reports of problems such as drivers double parking while looking for their customers, or wasted food at the end of the day.
