MCLEAN, Va. – Move over, frappes and lattes! It’s time for pumpkin craft beers.

Shelf space is being carved out early this year to make room for pumpkin brews, reports USA Today. Retailers and brewers alike are looking to capitalize on the popular fall seasonal sellers. From September through November in 2014, seasonal beers made up more than 20% of the nearly $20 annual craft beer market, according to the Colorado-based Brewers Association.

"The introductions in the industry are mirroring that of overall retail where you start to see Halloween merchandise this time of year and Christmas merchandise near Halloween," Eric Schmidt, director of research for market tracking firm Technomic Inc., told the news source. "It seems that every year the introductions come earlier and earlier."

Keith Villa, founder of Blue Moon Brewing, commented that consumers begin craving pumpkin beer in August, even though sales peak in September and October. “There are two main reasons we start our distribution of Harvest Pumpkin Ale in August," Villa told USA Today. "First, it means our beer is available when people first get pumpkin on their minds and second, it ensures we’ve reached peak distribution by the time September and October roll around." Blue Moon’s first seasonal beer, Pumpkin Ale, was first brewed in the fall of 1995 and was the first pumpkin beer to be nationally distributed.

Pumpkin Wheat from Shock Top Brewing Co, is also hitting store shelves. "We definitely see a lot of demand even though it's still hot in a lot of parts of the country," said Shock Top Vice President Jake Kirsch. "It's our most successful seasonal. We get a lot of consumer pull and see overall trends moving in that direction (for earlier arrival)."

Even though summertime is not yet over, Julia Herz, craft beer director at the Brewers Association, told the news source that it's not too early for pumpkin beers. “There are only a few beer styles at the top of the pack when it comes to fully eliciting the sensory side of a season," she said. "To me, pumpkin beers do just that and more, delivering autumn in a glass one sip at a time.”
